S-A-T-U-R DIY: yarn gifts

Here's a few things I crocheted and knitted to give as Christmas gifts.

S-A-T-U-R DIY: coffee table

This is a really cool idea for repurposing an old wooden typecase into a modern coffee table. If I had the skills and resources (or enough room to keep it), I would make it in a flash.

S-A-T-U-R DIY: gift ideas

Christmas is just around the corner, which means that if you haven't already, it's time to start thinking about gifts. Cut back on holiday expenses by making some of your gifts this year. Knowing my friends and family, they'd appreciate the thought, energy, and love that went into their gifts than anything large or expensive. Except my older sister. She is the most difficult person to shop for because she is so particular. Most of the time I just give her cash or a Jamba Juice gift card.

But aside from that, everyone loves handmade gifts. Here's  few easy one to work on:

Make an easy leather passport holder, which can also be used as a wallet.

I personally don't have the patience to make a blanket, but this can easily be used to make a scarf.

Take an old wool sweater or blanket (one you may already have or one from a thrift store) and make this easy wool wrap for anyone you know with a camera, digital or professional. Just do your research and figure out just how large you need to make the bag. Rather the bag be too big than too small.

I thought this idea was simply fantastic. It's so cute and personal. Write out a quick note to a loved one, and embroider it all on a piece of white linen to make it look like a page from a notebook.

Personalize a t-shirt, sweater, jacket, or any item of cotton clothing with some bleach designs. It can be something as easy as adding stripes, to adding intricate pictures. Know what your recipient likes, and get creative.

Although you can buy these decals on Etsy, where the seller also has some really cute lightening bolt decals, making it yourself is much more meaningful and fun. Threadbanger shows you how in this video.

Dinosaurs can be replaced with green army men, small wooden toys like tops, or even Lego's. Get creative with your pendants. Spray paint them a metallic color, screw on a small loop, and attach to a chain of the same color. Easy!

S-A-T-U-R DIY: felt slippers

After happening upon Martha Stewart's craft section on her website, I saw a few tutorials on how to make some cute felt slippers. They look comfy and easy enough, and would make a simple gift.

Succulents

After acquiring quite a few succulent cuttings, and after having them sit in vessels of water in my room to encourage root growth, I finally stuck them all in a pot. I expect these plants to explode out of their container rather soon. The aloe plant was the only one I had bought, everything else was just snapped off a larger plant.

Tattoo

I've never been completely attracted to the idea of getting a tattoo for myself, and far too often do I see people with bad tattoos. This is not one of them. I find this to be true art; the image is artistically and skillfully made, and holds a genuine meaning to the wearer.

SATUR D-I-Y: leaf stone

Although the instructions are in Swedish, the concept and pictures are easy enough to follow. You'll need a large, veiny leaf; cement; and a round cardboard tube.

Faux Fox

Although my skills are no where near this good, this is what I had in mind when I wanted to knit a fox stole.  You can buy a pattern here on Etsy, although I'm just going to wing it and see how it turns out.

SATUR D-I-Y: faux fox

Because my friend loves foxes so much, I decided to make her this faux fox wrap. Instead of using a real fox pelt, I'm going to knit and crochet one instead.

This is just the very beginning of my project, all I'm doing is making a basic scarf. From there, I'll crochet the head, legs, and tail. But for now, I'm working on the main bulk of the "pelt".

SATUR D-I-Y: easy gifts

1.  Seed Bombs or seed paper make for easy gifts. Buy seeds native to your area, as it makes it easier for plants to sprout and grow.

2.  If you have a hand at crocheting, these bow ties can make cute and easy gifts. Personally, I don't follow tutorials word for word; I usually take the idea from it and then work on it as I go. To improve upon this tutorial, I would crochet a ring (like a bracelet) instead of making it flat.

3.  Tiny terrariums make cute little gifts. The require little maintenance and make for cute decoration.

4.  Although this was designed specifically for an iPhone, you could easily make this Gameboy cover for anyone's phone, iPod, camera, or just as a small pouch. There is no tutorial for this, and is sold out on Etsy. Regardless, this is an easy enough project. All you need are the measurements of your phone (or whatever), some felt, red buttons, thread and needle, and some creativity. I'll try my hand at this and make a tutorial on it.

5.  Be a kid again and make some friendship bracelets. Or, take a twist on this classic and make some friendship necklaces.
